Limitation of the Freshman Class in Harvard College and the Engineering School became an actuality yesterday for the first time since the adoption in December, 1923, of the rule limiting the numbers to 1,000.
In accordance with this regulation the Committee on Admission admitted this year 1,000 new Freshmen to the College and the Engineering School. Of this number 884 had registered in the College up to 5 o'clock last night, and 58 in the Engineering School. A number of late registrations have already been allowed and subsequent late registrations with adequate excuse will bring the figure up to the 1000 that was set as the limit for new Freshmen.
New Record Set
The total enrolment at the University, when registration in all departments closed yesterday, set a new record for the first day of college. The number of students registered in all departments last night was 6,935, as compared with 6,374 last year at the same time. Late registrations will probably increase this total.
The College, with 3,173 men thus far registered, is larger than ever before, last year's 2,969 having been, up to yesterday, the record for the first day. The registration by classes was: 1,028 Freshmen, including dropped Freshmen (not included in the quota), 807 Sophomores, 725 Juniors, and 521 Seniors, in addition to 92 out of course students.
Opening day enrolment at the Law School gives 1,191 students, as compared with 1,104 last year, and includes a first year class of 555, whereas in September, 1924, the figure for the latter was 521.
100 More in Business School
The Business School enrolled almost 100 more students than last year, the figures being 659 in 1925, and 578 in 1924.
The Graduate School of Arts ad Sciences showed an increase of 77 over last year's enrolment at this time, the figures being 668 for 1925 and 591 for 1924.
Distinct gains viare made in most of the other departments of the University. The Engineering School showed 265 men enrolled as compared with 238 last year at the same time. The Graduate School of Education, with 162, showed an increase of 41, figures a year ago being 111. The Theological School, with 49 students has 24 more than last September.
Figures on the opening day in all departments of the University in comparison with similar figures for last year are as follows:
