SPRING TRACK OPENS WITH M. I. T. MEET

Crimson Has Particular Strength in Sprints and Middle Distances--M.I.T. Has Strong Pole Vaulter

At 2 o'clock today at Soldiers Field the University and Freshman track athletes will initiate the spring season in a dual meet with M. I. T. In the six consecutive meets that the two University teams have had, the Crimson has always come out on top with a safe margin to spare. Harvard will likely win again today, but not without running up against keen competition in at least half a dozen events.

M. I. T. has four or five men who have a fifty-fifty chance for a win this afternoon. At least five of them are practically certain of a second place at the minimum. But as five places will be counted, the first two will not assume their usual importance.

Crimson Should Win Dashes

With Miller, Peck, and Chase in the 100-yard dash the Crimson sprinters should clean up. In the longer sprint Miller and Lundell should turn in the same story, as well as Allen and Kane in the 440. It is a toss-up whether Allen or Kane will break the tape.

In the 880-yard run M. I. T. may well pull down first honors by means of Lenesse, who has made a considerable reputation during the past year. Watters will be his cheif contender. From the time trials held at the Stadium of late, lepesters tend to lavor the Harvard runner.

Last night Coach Farrell had not yet decided in which event he would put Cutcheon. Possibly he may back up Waters in the half, but more likely he will run the two-mile with Tibbetts. The latter won this event last year at the M. I. T. meet in 10m. 8 2-5s. Bemis of the Engineers will force Tibbetts to do his best. Haggerty and Barker will probably be the chief Crimson entries in the onemile.

With Hall and Broome in the broad jump. Murphy being out with a pulled tendon. Jones and Jenney in the high jump, Hallowell and Laimbeer in the discus, Dunker and Potter in the shot put, Berglund in the hammer, and Cheek and Dorman in the javelin Harvard should pick up a good quantity of points.

There are six Freshmen from whom Coach Farrell expects more than ordinary performances today. They are: Lomasney in the broad jump, Captain O'Neill in the 440 and 880, Pratt, the football player, in the weights, Luttmann in the mile, Burnes in the sprints, and Greenslit in the hurdles.
