Plenty of runs, sensational hits, and unexpected innings would sum up the situation on the Soldiers Field diamonds yesterday afternoon, while the Freshman and second baseball teams were winning their two games against the Dartmouth 1928 nine and the Worcester Academy team respectively. The first year players started in the seventh inning and romped away to a 16 to 5 win over Dartmouth while the seconds piled up a 10 to 5 score on the school team from Worcester.
The Freshman game started out like a battle royal. Until the seventh inning the score see-sawed back and forth with first the Crimson in the lead and then the Green.
Nine Run Rally in Eighth
Two runs by Dartmouth in the first half of the seventh frame put the Green in the lead by a five to four margin. It was in the Freshman's section of the period that the slaughter started. Four hits in a row by Jones, Pollard, Lord, and Linscott netted three runs and left one man on base who was brought in on Norris sacrifice. The three run lead proved to be only a beginning and when the Freshmen came to bat again in the eighth they started off by making three runs in a row before anyone went out. Haley was taken out of the box, but his successor Lane was hardly treated with more consideration. He was first touched for a home run by Chase and then for two triples in succession by Pollard and Lord. When the dust cleared away nine runs were up for the inning, bringing the final tally to 16 runs to 5.
The summary of the Freshman game is as follows:
Two-base hit, Chauncey. Three base hits, Murphy, Fusoni, Pollard, Lord, Adams, Home run, Chase, Stolen bases, Fusoni, Haley, Pollard, Lord, Linscott, Norris, Adams, Chase. Double plays, Adams to Pollard, Nordberg to Pollard to Lord. Hit by pitched ball, by Haley (Nordberg), by Barbee (McLaughlin). Time, 2h, 20m. Umpire, White.
