P. B. H. REORGANIZES SETTLEMENT WORK

A reorganization of the Social Service Committee of the Phillips Brooks House has been made whereby the entire system of social service conducted by that association will be more efficiently and more competently handled next year.

The most important step taken in the reorganization has been the appointment of six assistant secretaries to help the social service secretary, C. G. T. Lundell '27 in the direction of the work carried on in the 30 or so settlement houses to which the Phillips Brooks House sends undergraduate workers.

Appoint Assistant Secretaries

The following have been appointed assistant secretaries for the opening year: E. C. Aswell '26, L. B. R. Barker '26, D. C. Gates '26, R. D. Tucker '26, F. Q. Brown '27, F. V. Field '27.

The assistant secretaries will each be put in charge of four or five of the settlement houses and will be responsible for the work done by the undergraduate volunteers at these houses. In this way the committee feels that it can keep in closer touch with all the social service work done by the Phillips Brooks House. Volunteer workers will also be allotted work more suitable to their abilities.

Secretaries Will Hold Office Hours

Office hours will be kept at the Phillips Brooks House by the various assistant secretaries from 9 to 1 o'clock every morning during the fall, and at intervals during the winter and spring.

The committee has also decided to revise the social service pamphlet issued annually by the Phillips Brooks House to make it more into the form of a text book for novice social workers. The pamphlet will contain a thumbnail sketch of the work and aim of each house and also a bibliography of books helpful to social workers. In the latter connection the library at the Phillips Brooks House will be increased to include a special social service department.

Committee Plans Fall Conference

Another innovation made by the committee has to do with the fall conference held shortly after the opening of college, at which the social service work is explained to all volunteers. In past years the speeches at this conference have stressed the work from the point of view of the undergraduate. Next fall the more practical side of the question, the methods of giving to the boys at the settlement houses the most benefit, will be emphasized.

Thompson '27; Welfare Committee, to take care of the Thanksgiving Dinner and the Christmas Party, R. S. Coolidge '27, S. H. Hallowell '27, Austin Lamont '27, E. D. Pratt '27, A. L. Fordyce '28, A. H. O'Neil '28. W. G. Saltonstall '28. The clothing collectors will be H. M. Hart '26 and J. L. Prescott '27.
