While the first baseball team was taking a severe drubbing at the hands of the Holy Cross nine on the University diamond yesterday afternoon, the 1928 team was doing its share toward retribution on its own field by downing the Purple Freshmen by 6 runs to 5.
After the second inning the Freshmen had the game going their own way up to the final frame. It was only a last period rally which netted three runs that put the visiting first year men within striking distance of a victory. A considerable crowd had collected from the main contest, which had just finished, to see Barbee turn back the first two men who appeared in this inning and then send the third to first base on balls. The next man up got a single followed by a double from the bat of Phillips, accounting for two scores. Johnson, the next Purple man, got a single letting in Phillips but was thrown out himself at second on the next play.
Holy Cross took the lead in the first inning with one run which they did not add to until the eighth. Although they touched Barbee for 11 safeties, tight fielding by the Crimson and the former's inability to bunch hits, kept down the scoring. Sweeney, in the box for the visitors, struck out four men while Barbee fanned just double that number.
