The Dean's office may yet find a solution to the problem of making Harvard men a tribe of earnest scholars. New experiments carried on by E. D. Hutchinson '22 in the department of Psychology, under the direction of Professor William McDougall, show that "post-hypnotic suggestion" has its practical uses.
One student, who felt that he had been showing too much of the proverbial indifference toward his studies, saw great possibilities in this, and offered himself as subject for an experiment in this field of hypnotism.
While he was in the hypnotic daze, it was suggested to him that when he waked he would feel inclined to get to work on his lessons. The inclination came, when the effects of hypnotism had completely worn off, and now he has both the desire and the will to work.
