Harvard Still On Track To Reach Fossil Fuel-Neutral Status by 2026, Sustainability Report Finds
The University baseball season will formally open this afternoon, when all fielding candidates will report at the Locker Building at 3 o'clock. Head Coach E. W. Mahan '16 and Coach Claude Davidson of the Freshman team will speak.
Considerable change has been made in the University coaching system for the coming season. Coach Mahan has succeeded Coach J. S. Slattery, who will coach Boston College. Coach Fred Mitchell, who last year acted as battery coach, will be assistant coach of the entire team. Coach Fred Lake has supplanted W. J. Stewart as coach of the second team.
Several innovations are expected in coaching methods. A much more standardized system of plays will be used, similar to those in football and basketball. There will also be a much closer association of first and second teams. The University squad will be cut very early in the season. The less experienced players will then be relegated to the second team, where they will receive much more training than would be possible if they were retained as substitutes on the University squad. The first and second teams will play each other much more often than in former seasons.
To Construct Outdoor Nets
Another scheme will be the construction of a series of outdoor batting nets, so that there may be more practice with less danger from batted balls.
The new pitcher's goal has proved a decided success in the three days it has been in use. The daily scores are recorded and offer a good comparison of the merits of pitching candidates. Philip Spaulding '25 at present holds the record with 12 out of 20 perfect attempts to shoot the ball through the hole in the canvas.
The meeting for all Freshmen interested in baseball will be held at 7 o'clock on Thursday evening in Smith Halls Common Room.
