Last Year's Veterans and Stars From Freshman Team Compete--Pitching Outlook Is Excellent

New Haven, Conn., March 11--The baseball coaching staff at Yale announces a good turn-out of promising material this spring.

Pitching candidates have showed up well in the past week. Besides Captain Pond, Scott, Ashburn and Ross, who occupied the box last season, two former Freshman stars are showing great strength. Moran, of the 1927 nine, under the tutelage of Coach Wood, has done some of the most effective work this year. Holabird, 1926 pitcher, who was not in college last year, is even better.

Lovejoy and Hinchliffe, substitute catchers last season, are fighting for the place behind the bat, with two of last year's Freshmen, Barclay and Walker, not far behind.

Likely candidates for first base are Wortham, Kline, and Wadsworth, all of football game. Lindley looks like a sure bet for second base, though the position is being strongly contested by Kai Kee, the Chinese star who substituted for him last spring, and Melsrea from the Freshmen. Shortstop is being disputed between Ewing, last year's regular, and Festa, who was decisred ineligible for the 1927 Freshman team in mid-season last year.

Two Sophomores, Coleman and Jones, are leading in the competioes for third. Coleman was 1927 captsm last year. Work with the outfielders has been carried on to some extent with Neale, Wear, and Weed, veteisos of last season, showing the most promise. Other candidates for berths in the outfield are Noble and Cushing.

The probable line up in Yale's first game against Fordham on April 4, will be catcher, Lovejoy; pitchers Pond and Holsbird; first base Liudley second base, Lindley; third base Colesmar shortstop Ewing outfield, Weat and Weed.
