TWO RECEPTIONS TO BE HELD IN RECESS

Moving Pictures Innovation at Annual Brooks House Function--Christmas Night Affair Always Festive

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Students of the University who for one reason or another will be obliged to remain in Cambridge during the Christmas holidays, are invited to attend two annual Christmas functions. The reception given by President and Mrs. Lowell on Christmas Eve and the "open house" of the Phillips Brooks House Association on the evening of Christmas Day, are the two entertainments which have been arranged for students during the recess.

Although the official University figures have not been compiled for this year, it is estimated by the College Office that there are over 500 students whose homes are so far from Cambridge as to necessitate their spending most of the recess in travelling. Of this number approximately 200 live in the Pacific Coast states, and over 20 are from various possessions outside of the United States. Many of these students have made plans to visit in the east during the holidays, but it is for the remainder that these entertainments have been planned.

Christmas Eve Reception

President and Mrs. Lowell have invited all students of the University to a Christmas reception at their house on Thursday, December 24, from 8 to 10 o'clock in the evening. This reception at the President's house has in past years proved one of the most delightful entertainments of the College year.

An innovation in the Phillips Brooks House annual "open house" entertainment on Christmas night, December 25, is to take the form of moving pictures, it was announced yesterday by Mr. Walter I. Tibbetts, Graduate Secretary of the Phillips Brooks House Association. Three reels will be flashed on the screen, including films of Dickens' famous Christmas characters entitled, "Old Scrooge" and "Sunny Jim's Christmas."

The "open house" will be held in the parlor of the Phillips Brooks House, starting at 7 o'clock and lasting until 10 o'clock. The moving pictures will begin at 7.30 o'clock. Following the pictures Christmas carols will be sung by the gathering and refreshments will be served later in the evening.

All Students Invited

All students of the University are urged to be present at the "open house" entertainment. In past years this function has proved to be one of the most popular of the year and as many as 150 guests have been present.

The parlor and adjoining rooms are being decorated with greens and the customary Christmas tree and Yuletide wreaths. The plan is to gain as an appropriate and festive Christmas atmosphere as possible to take the place of the students' homes.
