The withdrawal of George Owen, Jr. '23 and E. B. Dooley, former Dartmouth signal caller, from the list of platform speakers at the Debating Union's football forensic was announced with regret last night by the officers of the Debating Union. At the same time it has been announced that Morton Prince '75, one of the University's first gridiron heroes, has signified his intention of attending Wednesday's verbal clash; Major Frank W. Cavanaugh, Boston College gridiron mentor, is another added starter and will support the side favoring the continuance of the present over emphasis on football.
Larger Room May be Used
At 8 o'clock on Wednesday, the first speaker will mount the platform of the Union. At present it is planned to use the Faculty Room for the football forum, but the great interest that is being shown by the University, may force the committee in charge to obtain the use of the Living Room.
The question, "Resolved, that this house deprecates the present over-emphasis upon intercollegiate football," has aroused general discussion in University circles, and no difficulty has been found in securing capable exponents for both sides of the question. On the affirmative side, arguing for a deduction in the football program will be M. A. Cheek '26, Captain of this year's gridiron squad; R. H. Field '26, Managing Editor of the CRIMSON and press agent of this fall's football releases; and E. J. Metzdorf '26, temporary Vice-President of the Debating Union, Backing the present system will be N. S. Howe '26, halfback on the University squad for three years; J. F. Barnes, Assistant Managing Editor of the CRIMSON; and Major Cavanaugh.
Prince Has Supported Owen
Morton Prince, will not speak from the rostrum, but will attend the debate as a guest, listed on neither side. In view of the fact that Mr. Prince wrote an article in support of George Owen's attack on football, since widely quoted, he is expected to speak, from the floor, in support of the affirmative side.
Although it has been impossible to secure either Owen or Dooley as formal speakers for Wednesday's epic debate, both are expected to be in the audience and may rise to take part in the general debate that will follow the oratorical efforts of the listed speakers.
The Debating Council yesterday announced that an attempt to secure the services of E. L. Casey '19, former star halfback and now gridiron instructor at Tufts, as an advocate of present conditions, had failed. Casey was unable to be present at the discussion, but expressed himself as greatly favoring a debate on the football problem.
