STEVENS ANNOUNCES FOUR FIRST CREWS

Four University Crews, Coach Stevens announced last night, will start rowing from the Newell boathouse Monday afternoon. The first two crews will row as follows:

First crew--Stroke, Capt. Robert Winthrop '26; 7, Kent Leavitt '26; 6, J. P. Hobbard '26; 5, Geoffrey Platt '27; 4, C. F. Darlington '26; 3, J. R. Barry '27; 4, C. F. Darlington '26; 3, J. R. Barry '27; 2, J. W. Dunlop '28; bow, J. H. Penkins '27; cox., W. E. Beer '26.

Second Crew--Stroke, John Watts Jr. '28; 7, Edward Page '28; 6, C. O'D. Iselin '26; 6, D. C. Gates '26; 4, T. D. Howe '28; 3, O. F. Righter '26; 2, Ellisha Canning '26; bow, Frederick Winthrop '28; cox., C. H. Pforzheimer.

Crew X and Y Chosen

Coach Stevens also named two other University crews. Crew X and Y, to be considered on an equal rating. Coach Fred Newell of the 150-pound crew picked a number of lightweight crews, and Coach Bert Haines selected three-eights from his Freshman candidates.

Six members of last year's University eight have returned to college, and five are in Coach Stevens' first boat. The new men are the bow three, Perkins and Barry from the 1925 second eight and Dunlop from last spring's Freshman crew. On the second crew, Winthrop, brother of the captain; Howe, and Watts rowed in the 1928 boat, while Page is also a sophomore, ineligible last season. Iselin, Gates, Righter, and Canning have all been on the University squad for two years, Iselin having captained the junior university crew last June. Of the coxswains, Beer steered the second crew last spring and Pforzheimer held the Freshman rudder ropes.

The other two crews, on the University squad include most of last year's first two Freshman eights. They will row as follows:

Champion 150-Pounders Intact

Coach Newell, just returned to the University coaching staff after a year's absence, had little trouble in choosing his first 150-pound crew. The eight that he picked is the same aggregation which defeated Yale and Princeton last spring. The second lightweight crew is made up mainly of the first 1928 boat, all of the men being Sophomores. The line-ups of the first two 150-pound crews follows:

Freshmen Crew Out Two Days

For two days the only crew rowing on the river has been the first Freshman eight, picked by Coach Haines from the experienced oarsmen among his candidates. The day before yesterday Coach Haines accompanied this crew in the launch, and yesterday C. S. Heard '25, coxswain of the University crew last year, did the coaching.

Besides this crew, which is stroked by Norton, a former St. Paul's oarsman, there are two other 1929 crews already picked, the second being stroked by Cole, last year Captain at Browne and Nichols. Coach Haines will hand over these three crews to his assistants, Heard and A. L. Hobson 2L, while he himself takes charge of the inexperienced men on the machines. He expects to have at least half of the candidates boated in the Leviathan by a week from Tuesday, and to have 20 crews on the river by November. The first three Freshman crews will row Monday as follows:

White Crew--Stroke, Cole; 7, Bell; 6, Haughton; 5, Shearer; 4, Felted; 3, Chamberlain; 2, Dane; bow, Outerbridge.

Blue Crew--Stroke, Carpenter; 7, Thatcher; 6, A. Smith; 5, Lind; 4, Brewster; 3, Addoms; 2, Emmons; bow, Levick.

Class Crew Organized Monday

All oarsmen assigned to the class crew will meet Coach Brown Monday afternoon at the University boathouse, where crews will be picked and captains elected. It is expected that about nine class crews will row this antumn, bringing the probable total of Harvard crews on the water in November to 43.

The coaches have announced that men wishing to row, particularly Freshman, can report at any time. All coxswains among the upper classes are urged to report
