THIS COMMUNISTIC COUNTESS

Had Helen lived, her face would never have launched very many ships against America. For she would never have been allowed to come near enough to exhibit her Hellenic proportions to western eyes. The State Department would have seen to that. Realizing that the female of the species can create commotion too communistic for democratic hearts to bear, the gentlemen at Washington very cavalierly cancel the Countess Karolyis visit here. On foreign soap boxes she must stand, not on the 99 plus percent pure cubes of these United States. If there is to be any propagandizing it must be native born. Even the hot air must be national.

So without the gates the Countess stays. And she is a very attractive Countess, it seems; not a Lewis Carrol Duchess in any sense of the word. Like the owner of the polyphonic name from England, she cannot outer to disturb the peace of a land economical even in visas.

It does seem as though the masters of popular destiny could behave a little less boorishly, not to say stupidly. Surely they know that what storm she could brew in the tea pots of the pleasant circles where she would visit could not do half the damage of this greater storm raised by their own rigor. It is indeed unfortunate that the Department of State must be so unpleasant to such a good looking lady.
