Man Who Managed Clients for High-End Cambridge Brothel Network Pleads Guilty
Over 400 men packed the Smith Halls Common Room yesterday afternoon at the initial meeting of the fall crew season. Following speeches by Coach Stevens, Coach Haines, Captain Winthrop, and Manager Ladd, about 175 Freshmen and 225 upperclassmen signed up for rowing.
Coach Stevens in his speech dealt for the most part with the necessity for maintaining a high standard of scholarship in conjunction with rowing.
"Not all the work necessary to put the job over is in the boat," he declared. "You came here to get an education, and rowing is not going to stand in your way. We demand good scholarship at the boathouses. If you must sacrifice either rowing or scholarship, then rowing must go by the board. We do not fear for rowing, however, because we know it is easy to do both. Fifty per cent of the men on last year's University and Freshman crews were on the Dean's List, and at least one man was Phi Beta Kappa."
Freshmen to Report Monday
Coach Haines, in addressing the Freshmen, dealt also on the necessity for scholarship. He directed all his men to report on Monday. Experienced men will start rowing in eights at once, and inexperienced men will spend a week at the machines before taking to the water in scows.
All Freshmen will be in eights by the middle of November. Before the close of the season, races will be staged among the Freshman crews.
Winthrop Stresses Experience
Captain Winthrop spoke on the necessity of having inexperienced men report early in the year. He pointed out the fact that three members of last year's University crew had rowed the previous season on class crews.
All crews will be made up and the lists posted today in the window of Leavitt and Pierce's. Rowing will begin officially for all crews on Monday.
