MITCHELL MAKES FALL BASEBALL REAL TEST

Conducts Workouts in Businesslike Manner--Practice Games Will Start Today and Continue Daily

With the World's Series about to drop the curtain on 1924 baseball, and with football playing the leading role on the stage of college athletics, the baseball practice last week on Soldiers' Field seemed an anachronism. Coach Fred Mitchell is, however, going about his work as though it were April rather than September. His intention is to make the fall work a real test instead of a mere means of exercise for men with nothing to do.

The squad will be divided for this afternoon's practice game, and two captains will be appointed for the daily contests. These will be played under the direct supervision of Coach Mitchell, who is devoting the entire fall to training the squad.

The seriousness of Coach Mitchell's intentions is borne out by the stiff infield drill he put his players through in the opening days of practice last week. Willard Howard '27, star shortstop on last year's victorious 1927 nine, H. E. Slayton Jr. '26, sub University third baseman, Philip Keene '25, and R. H. Field '26, second and first baseman respectively on the second nine last year, have made up one infield combination. Another was composed of F. W. Fay '26, at shortstop, B. M. Rice '25, captain of the seconds last season, at third, William Ullman '27 and W. P. Ellison '27, of last year's Freshman nine, at second and first respectively.

To complete the two teams, there is an abundance of applicants. C. L. Todd Jr. '26, one of the two "H" men on the fall squad, M. F. Amsden '26 and Howes Burton '26, of the second team with G. E. Bennett '27 and J. B. Durant '27 of the 1927 nine, are among the outfielders reporting to Coach Mitchell. J. E. Toulmin '25, the other "H" wearer, E. c. Herrmann Jr. '25, D. G. Casto '26, a second string twirler last year, with R. H. Booth '27, G. McN. Gates '27, C. P. Clifford '27 and A. G. Phelps '27, a quartet of Coach Davidson's 1927 moundsmeu, will take on the pitching work, with H. R. Jones '26, I. R. Duchin '27, W. G. Seaver '27, and J. E. Tobin '27 working on the other end of the battery.
