CROSS-COUNTRY CANDIDATES USE ALUM TO TOUGHEN FEET

30 Runners Trying for University Team and 27 for Freshman

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Alum dissolved in water is prescribed by Coach E. L. Farrell of the University cross-country team to toughen the soles of the feet of all candidates for the University and Freshman teams. It was the method used by the United States Army to prepare recruits for a long march.

A. H. O'Neill '28, who comes from Exeter, is one of three candidates among the Freshmen harriers who have made a reputation for themselves in preparatory school athletics. In the inter scholastic track meet held in the Stadium last June. O'Neill broke the record for the half mile set by W. J. Bingham '16, former track star and coach.

William Bachman '28 was captain of the Brooklyn Boys' High School track team and E. B. Hall '28 ran the 440 and SSO on the track team of Cambridge Latin School last year.

The runners were put through the usual workout yesterday with 30 candidates for the University team and 27 for the Freshman team. Coach Farrell believes it is too early in the season to make any predictions. Men desiring to enter the Freshman cross-country man ager competition may still apply without handicap.
