That the new baseball cage will be built on the western end of the tennis courts at Soldiers Field has been definitely decided by the University Planning Board, according to an announcement made yesterday by Major F. W. Moore '93, graduate treasurer of the Athletic Association. Work on the cage will begin next fall and will probably be completed in time for winter practice next year. Five tennis courts will have to be sacrificed for the new building.
Several other locations were considered. One of these would have placed the cage directly between the tennis courts and the open end of the Stadium, but the fact that it would practically block the crowds leaving the Stadium and that it would interfere with the straight-away made this suggestion unfeasable. The corner of Soldiers Field nearest Anderson Bridge was another possible location. In view of the fact, however, that such a position would prevent the enlargement of the present locker building, which is urgent and a very possible occurrence in the near future, this also was discarded.
"The western end of the tennis courts is in the way of no prospective innovation, and at the same time conveniently near the locker building," Major Moore told a CRIMSON reporter yesterday. "We are also considering a plan of turning the remaining tennis courts into asphalt courts, so that they can be used early in the spring," he added.
