Puffer's one bad inning and several atrocious errors, mental and physical, on the part of his supporters gave Dean Academy a 6 to 5 victory over the Harvard seconds on the Freshman Field yesterday. The undefeated visitors came near having their streak broken, as the seconds got a four-run lead in the first two innings and a ninth inning flare-up just missed reversing the outcome.
Rice walked to start the game and stole second. Keene fanned, but Field drove Rice in with a long single to center. Field stole second, and scored when Maher doubled to left. Amsden and Cotter were easy outs.
The second inning was the last one for pitcher Nolan. Mann singled with one out, and went to third on Puffer's single to left, the latter taking second when the left fielder mishandled the drive. Rice walked, filling the bases. Keene's tantalizing infield roller went as a hit, scoring Mann, and Puffer also tallied on a bad throw by the Dean third-sacker. Field was passed, filling the bases again, but Maher hit into a fast double play.
Dean's five-run flurry in the fourth put the Academy nine ahead. Puffer was found for six hits, two of them triples, and Samuels made a damaging error of judgment in right field which hurt the Harvard cause. The visitors added what proved to be the winning run in the fifth on a hit, two stolen bases caused by Puffer's failure to hold the runner close to the bag, and an error by Mann.
With one away in the ninth, Keene singled. Field hit between first and second, but Norton, Dean first-sacker, made a sensational back-hand stab and threw Keene out at second. Maher beat out an infield hit. Amsden singled cleanly to center, and Field slid in home safely. With the tying and winning runs on base, Cotter lifted an easy foul to the first baseman.
The outstanding feature of the game was the all round work of Maher, particularly his throwing to bases. *Curry out in second for batting out of order. Two-base hit, Maher.
