The University Tennis team lived up to expectations Saturday afternoon when it trounced the Princeton combination, curiously enough by the same count it scored last year, 6-3. Taking four of the singles and two of the doubles matches, the Crimson got away to an early lead which left the outcome never in doubt.
As had been predicted, the battle between Ingraham and Captain Howard was the outstanding feature of the afternoon, and it was only after three sets, of the most brilliant tennis that the Princeton star gained a well-earned victory. Captain Howard started off with a rush, taking the first set by a 6-4 margin. Fighting an uphill battle, Ingraham took the second set, but the pace wass too great for him, and he finally dropped the last after 18 games in which neither man showed any marked superiority.
Cummings also had his difficulties. Like Ingraham, he dropped the first set to his opponent, but becoming accustomed to Paton's style of play, he ran the last two sets out in quick succession.
There is a proverb in tennis that a doubles combination is as strong as its weakest player, and this was born out in the match between Ingraham and Captain Pfaffmann, and Captain Howard and Holm-Smith. Both Crimson players were in top form, and were equally strong. It was therefore not surprising that they should win their match with comparative ease, only allowing their opponents to take five games.
