The tennis match against the Business School played yesterday on the Divinity Courts resulted in a 6-3 victory for the University. The fast and brilliant work of Davies and Wheeler caused them to come through all their matches undefeated and win the sole points for the graduate school. Over half of the matches played yesterday went to dance sets, the whole encounter lasting nearly five hours.
It was not entirely unexpected that Ingraham and Pfaffmann bowed to Davies and Wheeler, two players high in national standing. Both singles, though and the doubles match in which the University's ranking players were defeated were unusually close. Ingraham barely lost two deuce sets 8-6, while Pfaffmann managed to win the first set of his match with Wheeler and then dropped the next two. The doubles between these four first men was perhaps the best match of the afternoon. Having lost the initial set, the University tennis players staged a spectacular comeback and won the second in eight games. Their winning streak, however, broke as Davies and Briggs won the last set 6-3.
Debevoise Subs for Harrington
Debevoise, regular first man on the second tennis team, played number six for the University yesterday in place of Harrington, who was absent because of an injured foot.
The matches played yesterday resulted as follows:
Singles.--Davies (B) defeated Ingraham (H), 8-6, 8-6; Wheeler (B) defeated Pfaffmann (H), 8-10, 6-2, 8-6; Briggs (H) defeated Hawley *B), 5-7, 6-3, 6-2; Cummings (H) defeated Milliman (B), 5-7, 19-17, 6-4; Dixon (H) defeated Lowe (B), 6-1, 6-3; Debevoise (H) defeated Young (B), 6-2, 6-0.
D\Doubles,--Davies and Wheeler (B) defeated Ingraham and Pfaffmann (H), 7-5, 2-6, 6-3; Briggs and Cummings (H) defeated Milliman and Lowe (B), 6-8, 6-4, 6-3; Dixon and Debevoise (H) defeated Johnson and Freedman (B), 6-3 6-4.
