HARVARD SWORDSMEN WIN FIVE OUT OF SIX PLACES

Five of the six places in the recent foils and duelling swords tournaments, held at the B. A. A., were won by Harvard men, it was announced last night. These tournaments constitute the New England trials for the National fencing title, and the six men who qualified have the right to enter the National tournament, which will begin in New York on May 2. From the results of the latter tourney the Olympic team will in all probability be chosen.

In the foils, first place went to John Watson a former, now representing the Fencer: Club. Captain E. H. Lane '24, of the University team, placed second, losing to Watson by the margin of one bout. Burke Boyce '22, former University captain, who placed third in the national tournament last year was third in the trials.

C. J. Shearn Jr. 1L. won the duelling swords competition, with the second and third places awarded to E. H. Lane '24 and J. K. Watson 1L. respectively. An interesting feature was that Captain Lane had never fought with the duelling swords until a week before the tournament. Although most of the qualifying fencers will engage in the New York tournament, divisional examinations will prevent Captain Lane from making the trip.
