The committee appointed some time ago by the Governing Board of the Union for the considerations of speakers has as yet decided nothing. At least no statement has been issued and the result of their profound deliberations still remain a secret.
It would-he delightful to be a committee! For decisions would be unnecessary. The vexed question of getting up, for instance, could be well left to the following day because there was no quorum. Doubts as to whether to eat bran of graham inufilns for breakfast would dissolve for they could be referred to a subcommittee which in turn would consider recommending the consideration of recommendations.
Carrying the idea into later life one could well refuse to pay one's income tax--on the grounds that one was a committee. And a committee's policy is always to wait till the next session or the next President. Everything would be so easy--if one were a committee!
So the Union's committee can only he congratulated on being true to type.
It is only curious that the Governing Board has not prodded it, if ever so slightly and delicately. A week ago it was the general impression that the Governing Board had taken the action it did to arouse general interest and insure large audiences for whoever was recommended. It cannot but realize that to postpone any action, to postpone any information until after the vacation may somewhat deaden the question. While if it neglected to take any action until after a new undergraduate committee was elected it would lose much of what it seeks. Hardly can it be hoped that a new and inexperienced group of undergraduates will be as eager to cooperate for mutually desired ends as is the present one.
And meanwhile, with breathless expectancy not a few undergraduates are awaiting the momentous decision of the complex committee as to whether they may be allowed to hear, in their own club both sides of a question!
