MORE THAN 60 FRESHMEN REPORT FOR CAGE WORK

25 PERCENT OF CANDIDATES ARE ON PROBATION

More than 60 Freshman baseball prospects reported at the initial workout in the cage yesterday afternoon, and under the direction of Coach Davidson started on the preliminary conditioning which will continue for the next two weeks.

The toll taken by probation this year is extremely heavy, 25 percent of the candidates having dropped below the required scholastic standard. The coaches have urged these men to put every effort into passing the April hour examinations, so that they may participate in the spring season.

Pitcher's berth is as usual the most desired, 15 men having signed up for the position. Both pitchers and catchers have been working out under Coach Mitchell for the past seven weeks, and are gradually getting into shape. Several experienced pitchers are in the line-up, including R. H. Booth of Exeter, O. H. P. Baldwin of Lawrenceville, and Dwight Barnum of Middlesex. The nine catchers include such experienced men as H. S. Gans, H. F. Leith, and W. G. Seaver.

The seven weeks' extra training of these men combined with a dark day to confuse the embryo batter men at their first workout. There was a notable tendency on the part of the pitchers to put their full strength into each toss, and a rather hopeless batting record was the afternoon's result. Things are expected to run more smoothly, however, as soon as the rest of the aggregation has had more time to get into shape.
