Mr. Arthur Whiting will present this evening in the John Knowles Paine Concert Hall of the Music Building the fourth of his series of expositions of classical and modern chamber music. The program will begin at 8.15 o'clock.
Both vocal and pianoforte music will be given. Mr. Whiting will play the piano, while Miss Dorothy Fox of New York, soprano, will be the assisting artist.
The program is interesting, consisting of French folk-songs, German Lieder by Schubert and a group of pianoforte preludes by Debussy. The first of the folk-songs is from the province of Auvergne and is a military call played in camp morning and evening by the Roman trumpeters; the remainder are from the Basse Bretagne.
The Schubert songs are among the best-known of that great composer and illustrate the early period of the Romantic School; "Gretchen am Spinnrade" is a masterly treatment of the voice and pianoforte in combination. The songs by Faure and Koechlin are examples of modern French style; Faure is noted for beauty of melodic line and Koechlin for the fantastic and rhythmical use of the pianoforte.
The concert is open to members of the University free of charge, and seats will be reserved for students on the main floor of the hall until the program begins. The public is admitted to the balcony, but the purchase of tickets is necessary.
