"Suppose we eliminate the subway station altogther, then, and let people walk out to Harvard from Central Square?"
This tart suggestion was made yesterday by a representative of the Boston Elevated in the course of an informal discussion of the Harvard Square subway rotunda problem before the Committee on Street Railways of the Massachusetts Legislature. It was addressed to Mr. George Wright, president of the Harvard Square Business Men's Association, which is sponsoring a petition to remove the rotunda from the center of the square to the sidewalk.
In its opposition to Mr. Wright's proposal, the Elevated has gone so far as to construct a miniature model of subway tubes passages, and underground cables, to illustrate their complexities. This model was displayed with considerable effect in yesterday's hearing before the legislative committee.
A variety of plans to solve the square's traffic problems were before the committee. Despite the preparations that bad been made for the hearing, however, the complexities of legislative procedure made it imposition to reach any definite conclusion. The committee decided to continue the dispute on February 12.
