PIERIAN SODALITY GIVES SEASON'S FIRST CONCERT

CONTEMPORARY PIECES SHARE PLACE WITH THE OLD MASTERS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Pierian Sodality of 1808, the University orchestra, will open its 118th season with a concert at the Copley Theatre this afternoon at 3.30 o'clock. For a number of years the concert at the Copley has been one of the chief annual activities of the organization.

The Pierian Sodality Orchestra is the oldest institution of its kind in America. Its purpose is to bring the best in contemporary music before the American people. Already several modern compositions have been used, but selections from Mozart, Mendelssohn, Shubert, and Beethaven still predominate.

G. A. Brown Will Direct

The concert this afternoon will be under the direction of G. A. Brown '25, the conductor of the orchestra. M. L. Brown '25, baritone and soloist of the University Glee Club, will assist.

The following program will be given: Overture to "Iphigenia in Aulis"  Gluck Unfinished Symphony in B minor  Shubert Recitative and aria, "Eri tu cha macciavi"  Werdi Song of the Sandman and Prayer from "Hansel and Gretel"  Humperdinck Jaernefelt Berceuse Two Sentimental Tangos (for dancing)  Vigil Thompson '22 "I Attempt from Love's Sickness to Fly"  Purcell "Wie bist du meine Koenigen"  Brahms Cartner "Love is Mine" (C. T. Leonard '23, accompanist.) Prelude to second act of "Louise"  Charpantier Overture to "Oberon"  Weber Tickets for the concert may be procured at the Cooperative Society, Herrick's, and the Copley Theatre. A few are also available at the Pierian Sodality office in the Music Building.
