Harvard Students To Vote on Divestment From Israel in Inaugural HUA Election Survey
With the passing of football from the stage last Saturday, winter sports yesterday entered into the center of the athletic limelight. A grand total of 141 men turned out, 46 for hockey, 45 for basketball, and 40 for wrestling, all of which sports opened their season yesterday at preliminary meetings.
Forty-six candidates greeted Coach E. L. Bigelow at the opening of the University hockey season yesterday afternoon in the Boston Arena. Of this number ten were prospective goalies and 36 signed up for the forward line or defense positions.
Of the forwards only letter men reported. These were Clark Hodder '25, center, and W. M. Austin, '25, left wing. G. W. Burgess '25 and P. W. Chase '25, both of whom won their "H's" last year, were at the rink but were not dressed for practice. Burgess dislocated a vertebra while leading the cheering at New Haven last Saturday and will be out for a week or more. Chase, along with Captain E. M. Beals '25, N. S. Howe '26, and J. W. Hammond '25, all football men, will not be permitted to report for practice until December 8. Isadore Zarakov '27, C. D. Coady '27, and Nathaniel Hamlen '27, members of last year's Freshman sextet, will also report on December 8.
New Recruits Join Ranks
There were some new additions to the forward ranks of the squad which had not been foreseen. These included R. L. Pruyn '27, former Captain at St. Paul's school, ineligible last year because of scholastic difficulties, and Willard Howard '27, former Middlesex star, who was also unable to play Freshman hockey.
Two of the ten goal guards who reported were letter men, Thayer Cumings '26, and J. L. Newell '26, who alternated last year at this position. The other eight, with the exception of R. T. Flood '27, who played goal on the 1927 team, have not had much experience in college.
The squad did not indulge in any strenuous work yesterday. They were given plenty of opportunity to get used to their skates again and to dribble the puck up and down the ice, shooting at the goalies as they passed by. No lineups were picked. According to Coach Bigelow it is expected there will be no cut in the squad until the football men come out on December 8. In the meanwhile he will watch carefully the work of the new candidates in order to give all the men an equal chance.
