The attitude of Cardinal O'Connell towards Harvard was described as an attitude of "commiserating insolence" by John J. Chapman '81, in a telegram to the CRIMSON yesterday. Mr. Chapman's letter to Bishop Lawrence, denouncing the appointment of a Catholic as a Fellow of Harvard College, was made public yesterday.
The text of the telegram is as follows.
"I cannot see why Protestants in America treat the Catholic question as if a continuous reign of terror were a progress. Here is a Roman Cardinal who speaks with commisocating insolence about Harvard University and no one answers him. It happens that Harvard has adopted what may become a policy of having are Catholic on her Board of seven. No Protestant points it out. My friends have begged me not to do so.
English Would Offer Opposition
"If to English a citizen should write to an Anglican bishop who happened also to be a trustee of a non-Catholic college and pointed out a similar fact no and would be brightered. Men would take up the debate in an open fashion and intelligent men would adopt a quiet gone in canvassing the innovation.
"That is the state of things every one ought to hope for in America. The way to bring it about is for everyone to speak openly both in public and in private about the Catholic question. When this practice becomes general it will be time enough to consider the expediency of having a Catholic on the Board of". Follows of Harvard College. At any rate let each one of us help to bring in a reign of common sense on the Catholic question."
