DEBEVOISE DEFEATS GORDON IN UNION TOURNAMENT UPSET

The Union tennis tournament, which has already been marked by many strange vicissitudes, brought forth still another surprise yesterday when Debevoise, seeded sixth, defeated Gordon, the third player seeded, in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. This places Debevoise in the semi-final round in the upper half of the draw with Cummings, while in the lower half, Allen and Perkins remain.

In the doubles, Debevoise also advanced to the final round with his partner, Dixon, defeating Bandler and Babbitt, 6-3, 6-1, in a listless match that called forth very little brilliant tennis. In the only other encounter of the afternoon, Cummings and Perkins easily defeated Collier and Pratt, 6-0, 6-2.

With the tennis season almost at as end, there remain now only five more matches to be played in the Union tournament, which should be rounded up by next Tuesday. But due to the frequent upsets that have taken place this fall, Coach Harry Cowles will undoubtedly be forced to prolong the outdoor season until enough test matches have been played to determine, the indoor squad that will practice at Longwood this winter.
