The retirement of Mr. George Wigglesworth '74 from the presidency of the Union leaves a vacancy which will be hard to fill. Rarely are such ability and so absorbing an interest in Harvard and anything that is hers combined in one man.
Since the death of Major Higginson in 1919 Mr. Wigglesworth has taken over the executive direction of the Union. His business interests are large, and his position as chairman of the Board of Overseers made many demands on his time, but he has always been ready to give his attention in full measure to the needs of the Union. Under his leadership it has grown so large that the governing board has been forced reluctantly to limit the number of its members.
All of this can be traced to the influence of Mr. Wigglesworth himself, an influence as powerful as it has been modest. For, coupled with a winning geniality, self-effacement is Mr. Wigglesworth's most striking characteristic.
The enthusiastic recognition of his services by the college s a whole can be only partial. It is left for his intimate associates fully to realize the true value of his work.
