RHODES APPLICATIONS ARE DUE OCTOBER 25

Harvard Candidates Must Have Letter From President Lowell--May Apply at University 5 Before October 10

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Applications for Rhodes Scholarships are already being received by the secretaries of the Committees of Selection in the 32 states in which appointments are to be made early in December of this year, according to an announcement by Professor William C. Greene, of Harvard, Secretary of such Committee for Massachusetts. The states include those which rank as the ten highest in student representation at Harvard University, among them California, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Ohto, Pennsylvania, and the New England states.

Candidates may send in their applications at any time before October 25, but they must first be selected as the representatives of their own colleges or universities. Each Harvard candidate must file with his application a letter of recommendation from President Lowell, and should apply at 5 University Hall for such letter on or before Friday, October 10.

The number of candidates who may represent an institution in the competion within any one state depends upon the number of its students. Harvard may, therefore, have five candidates for each appointment in the Massachusetts competition.

Winners Have Three Years at Oxford

In October, 1925, the successful candidates will begin their residence and study of three years at Oxford University. The present stipend is 350 pounds a year.

Candidates may apply either for the state in which they make their home or for any state, in which they have received at least two years of their college education before applying. For this reason Harvard College students of two or more years' residence, whose home is in another state, may compete either in Massachusetts or in their home state.

Method is Left to College

There is a committee of selection for each state but a candidate must first be designated by his own college or university. The method of choice by a college or university is left to the individual institution, but the basis of consideration is generally that of the state committee, namely: literary and scholastic ability and attainments; qualities of manhood, force of character, and leadership; and physical vigor, as shown by interest in outdoor sports or in other ways. There is no written examination, nor is a knowledge of Greek required.

Application blanks and information may be secured at 5 University Hall, or from the Secretary of the Committee of Selection for Massachusetts, 44 Shepard Street, Cambridge.
