The Dramatic Club announced at its open meeting last night that it has departed radically from its established custom in giving this year for the first time a play by an American author. The play chosen for this year's production as announced by the president of the club at the meeting last night, is "Pedro--the King" by Miss A. Anthony Wyce of Boston.
The setting of the play is historical; the action is in Spain in the fourteenth century and centers around Peter the Cruel of Castile, who is a leading character in the play.
Ordinarily the club gives only plays by foreign authors which have never before been produced in America, but this year the officers of the club decided to give this play by an American in view of its great merit. This is the first time the play has been produced.
Over 100 Attend Meeting
Over a hundred men attended the meeting last night which marked the inauguration of the club's year. Eduardo Sanchez '26, president of the Dramatic Club, presided and introduced the speakers. J. W. D. Seymour '17, president of the club while in college and a former coach of its productions, spoke first. He held up before the candidates a prospect of hard work but promised them that they would secure a good deal of satisfaction from the work after it was done.
Praises Extra-Curriculum Activity
Professor John Tucker Murray '99 followed Mr. Seymour and recommended the club to all undergraduates as a means of broadening their educations. In the course of his remarks he said that studies and extra-curriculum activities were both a part of college education, and that in his opinion both were equally important.
After the meeting all candidates were given an opportunity to sign up for entrance into the various competitions. Acting candidates have been asked to sign up in bluebooks at the Union for trials, which will be held this evening at 7 o'clock and tomorrow at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and at 7 in the evening in Paine Hall. The play will be read at 3 o'clock this afternoon in Paine Hall, and all acting candidates and others interested are welcome to attend.
