"No Comparison Between This Fall's Crew and Last" Says Coach Stevens

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"There is no comparison" was Coach Stevens' comment yesterday when asked to compare the crews this Fall with the eights of a year ago. "Whereas last fall the bulk of the attention had to be given to tearing down, we are able to go right ahead now where we left off last Spring. I am very well pleased with the showing of the candidates thus far."

Coach Stevens explained that one of the greatest difficulties last year was in developing stroke oars. He believes that he has three capable strokes now in Robert Winthrop '26, W. K. Rice '27; and Barrett Scudder '27, "I believe" said Coach Stevens, "that Crew X could trim the best crew we had together at any time last fall. And I expect a constant improvement will be noticeable from now on."

Academic Work Interferes

One of the greatest difficulties this year has been getting the same eight men to row daily in the same crew. Long afternoon laboratory sessions and field trips have made it practically impossible to assemble the same men regularly in one crew, and this has been particularly true of crews Y and Z. F. P. Weymer '26, R. W. Ladd '27, and C. I. Wylde '27 have been the utility men who, although not assigned regularly to any crew, have been filling in when other candidates have failed to appear. The failure of Weymers name to appear on one of the permanent lists Coach Stevens explained by saying that he was particularly capable of filling in at other places, adding that he had a definite place for him when the line-ups took some semblance of permanence.

The crews as they are rowing now are not permanent line-ups and are subject to change at any time. Yesterday after the crews X and Y had gone up the river about three miles. Coach Stevens ordered last year's Freshman captain, Geoffrey Platt, '27 to exchange seats with J. P. Hubbard '26 at seat seven in crew X. Platt appears to be a much more finished oarsman, and will remain in his new position for several days at least.

The eight stroked by Winthrop rowed particularly well yesterday afternoon. Maintaining a stroke at least two points lower than the crew stroked by Rice, crew X still pulled ahead gradually. At present Coach Stevens is devoting most of his time to form, and there have been no sprints or racing starts indulged in by the three eights under his direct tutelage. The timing and spacing occupied his attention yesterday afternoon in the eight mile workout.

The crew were boated yesterday as follows:

Crew X--Stroke, Robert Winthrop '26; 7, Goffrey Platt '27; 6, J. W. Gates '27; 5, G. R. Johnson '25; 4, D. C. Gates '26; 3, O. F. Righter '26; 2, C. O'D. Iselin; bow, S. B. Kelley '25; cox., C. S. Heard 3E.S.
