Applications for Rhodes Scholarships, which entitle the holders to three years' study at Oxford University, England, with a liberal cash allowance, are now being received in great numbers by the secretaries of the Committees of Selection in the 32 states in which appointments are to be made early in December of this year, according to an announcement made last night by Professor William C. Greene '11, secretary of the committee for Massachusetts.
According to the rules for the award of the famous Rhodes stipends, each holder of a scholarship must be a man who has displayed literary and scholarstic ability, qualities of manhood, force of character, and leadership, and physical valor, as shown in interest in outdoor sports or in other ways.
Among the 32 states for which Rhodes Scholarships have been established are California, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and the New England states. Students from any of the 32 states, who have also spent at least two years of study at Cambridge, may apply for one of the scholarships awarded in their home state, or for one of the Massachusetts awards. The number of candidates who may represent an institution within any one state depends on the number of its students, and Harvard, due to its enrolment of close to 3000 undergraduates, is entitled to five candidates for each appointment from Massachusetts.
According to Professor Greene, each candidate from the University must file with his application a letter of recomendation from President Lowell, and applications for such letters will be received at 5 University Hall up to Friday, October 10. The last day on which applications together with letters of recommendation may be submitted to the State Committee of Selection is October 25.
