"We should like to have 400 candidates for the track team" said Coach Farrell at the meeting yesterday which inaugurated the winter track season. In spite of several absentees, the attendance was one of the largest that has ever reported for the winter season: one hundred University and 50 Freshman aspirants reported. Captain Merrill, Coach Farrell and Assistant Coach Teschner were the speakers.
Coach Teschner stressed the need for cooperation if winning teams are to be developed. Captain Merrill expressed confidence and determination that the team would go out to win all meets this year, pointing to the triangular meet with Cornell and Dartmouth as the aim of the winter season.
Weak in Weight and Sprint Events
Coach Farrell showed his gratification at the large attendance, but said that more men were needed, particularly in the weight and sprint events. "We have stars in several of the events but poor material in others. One candidate in ten can be developed into a point winner. We should like at least 400 men or 40 point winners."
According to Mr. Farrell, figures at present favored Yale to win the meet next June with a score of 81 points. But he said that he saw no reason why the team should not beat Yale if it worked from now on with the Yale game as its objective, but doing its best to win all intermediary meets.
Training starts immediately in preparation for the first meet two weeks from tomorrow. The board track will be ready on Monday of next week.
The team will be weakened by the absence from college of M. A. Cheek '26 who has gone to South America for a trip across the Andes. Cheek will return to college next fall.
