Followers of the University squash tournament received a surprise yesterday when G. D. Debevoise '26 defeated W. P. Dixon '25. The University captain, who already this season has won from C. C. Peabody, the state champion, and from Channing Wakefield 3L., the University champion, lost to his No. 2 man, 5-15, 15-11, 15-13, 18-15.
Debevoise, who has had a slump lately, having lost his last two matches, seems to have found himself again. Dixon also has not been up to scratch as was shown in the semi-final match with Harrington which he won only by a narrow margin. But Debevoise had the edge on him yesterday, and with confident strokes he took point after point from his opponent. His back-hand served him to good advantage. Dixon appeared to be unable to cope with it or with his opponent's low shots. His usual steadiness was lacking.
Entries for the state tournament of the Massachusetts Squash Racquets Association close at noon on Thursday. The tournament this year will be played on the Harvard courts and applications should be made there or at the Lincoln's Inn Society. A number of men on last year's list, including Peabody, Powers, and Wakefield, have already signed up.
