Lesss than fifty men reported yesterday at the meeting which marked the opening of the University and Freshman cross-country season. The group was addressed briefly by Manager Collins, Captain Coburn, and Coach Farrell, who outlined the course of training which will he followed during the ten weeks before the race against Yale. After the meeting the entire squad jogged slowly about one mile up the river bank.
During the next few days the length of the runs will be gradually increased, and this training, along with special setting-up exercises, will lead up to the work at Belmont, which will start in about two weeks. Soon after that, there will be a special Interdormitory meet for all the members of the Freshman squad.
Coach Farrell declared yesterday that for a successful season there should be at least three times as many men out as reported for practice yesterday. He pointed out that not any experience in track work is necessary for success in cross-country, if only the runner will work steadily and make use of the instruction which the coaches and experienced men have to offer. He also stated that the work of the cross-country squad is the best possible training for men who plan to do any distance running in the spring.
The opening of the fall track season has again been postponed, and no work will be mapped out for the track men until next week.
The tentative University schedule is.
October 13--Middlebury College.
October 20--Dartmouth and University of Maine.
November 17,--Princeton and Yale at New Haven.
November 26,--I. C. A. A. A. A. at New York.
