Red Top, Conn., June 7.--Excessive heat, followed later in the day by a heavy rain, hampered the work of the crews today, and in view of the existing weather conditions Coaches Muller and Haines gave their men nothing but light work-outs both morning and afternoon.
Practice for the University eights during the morning consisted of the usual trip down river to opposite the Navy Yard and back. The feature of the paddle was Coach Muller's filling in at numbers 4 and 3 University A. These positions are occupied respectively by N. C. Webb '23 and C. H. Hollister Jr. '24. This system has been used during the week with marked effect, for in this way it is possible for Coach Muller to get more closely acquainted with the work of each man and make his observations while actually in the shell the basis for more detailed instruction from the coaching launch.
During the course of the afternoon's practice Coach Muller rowed successively at 7 in Crew A and at stroke in the Junior shell. About four miles were covered altogether. The first time trials, several of which are likely before June 22, will be held next week.
The Freshmen had much the same sort of program as the University, except that the work of substitution was carried one step further than was the case with Coach Muller's boats. Coaches William and Bert Haines started out at stroke and seven respectively, and moved down the shell, occupying in succession the positions of 6 and 5, 4 and 3, and 2 and bow. Afternoon work for the 1926 men was confined to a 3-mile paddle.
