Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Clean fielding and good running on the bases gave the University baseball team a 7 to 5 victory over Providence yesterday afternoon at Soldiers Field. Although the visitors registered 11 hits to the Crimson's seven, the erratic pitching of Criges and several infield errors gave the home team a noticeable advantage.
For the first four innings Captain Owen held his opponents to three hits and no runs, but in the fifth, Providence began to find the ball, a walk, a single, and a home run by Feid bringing in three runs. Coach Slattery then put in Bemis, who allowed six hits and two runs during the remainder of the game.
The Crimson started things off with a rush. Criges was wild at the outset, passing Clark with four straight balls. Gordon flied out to third, Jenkins walked to first, and Owen was hit by a pitched ball. With the bases full, Buell popped up a high fly to the catcher. Then Hammond, who played brilliantly throughout the game, came through with a scratch single to right field, and Clark and Jenkins crossed the plate.
Neither team was able to bring in any runs in the next two innings, but in the first of the fourth, Hammond landed hard on an outside ball, placing it well over Beck's head. He had rounded second before the right fielder reached the ball, and had little trouble in beating out the throw home.
Two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh, which came as the result of loose fielding and four singles, completed the Crimson's total.
After Bemis stopped the fifth inning rally which brought in three runs, the visitors had some difficulty in fathoming his deceptive drops. In the eighth and ninth, however, five hits drove in two runs. With men on first and second, Bemis steadied down, and a fly to Clark and a grounder to Buell brought the game to an end.
