Schoolboys Lead in Singles but Lose Final Doubles Matches

The Freshman tennis team was given a scare yesterday afternoon when Newton High proved unexpectedly strong and led 4-3 as the two remaining doubles matches started. The Crimson came through in both of the last matches, however, and won the day 5-4.

Two hours before W. T. Smith of the Crimson had beaten Hill of Newton, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, to the surprise, of all. Then things went wrong and three sets went to Newton, but numbers five and six of the University gained their matches and each team had three points.

Hill and Johnson of Newton who were national boy champions last year ran through Smith and Deberbise, 6-1, 6-3. The two doubles pairs, A. R. Allen and G. H. Perkins, G. M. Laimbeer and L. A. Weissman, won gaining the victory, 5-4.

The results of the matches are:

Singles: W. T. Smith defeated Hill (N), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4; Johnson (N) defeated G. H. Perkins, 6-3, 6-1; Turner (N) defeated G. D. Debevoise, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4; Martin (N) defeated Bernard Bandler, 6-2, 6-3; L. A. Weissman defeated Wales (N) 2-6, 6-2, 6-1; G. M. Laimbeer defeated Gotshall (N), 6-3, 6-3.

Doubles: Hill and Johnson defeated Smith and Debevoise; 6-1, 6-3; A. R. Allen and Perkins defeated Martin and Turner, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; Laimbeer and Weissman defeated Wales and Gotshall, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
