Boat Club Eights Meet University C and D at 5.30 Over Henley--Third Crew Again Trims Seconds

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

When the second and third University crews meet the Union Boat Club eight over the Henley at 5.30 o'clock this afternoon, they will face a combination which includes in its membership oarsmen representing six different colleges or rowing clubs.

There are three former University oarsmen, two from Cambridge, England, and one who rowed in the American Army crew of 1919, while Benz, who rowed at Washington University under Coach Leader in 1921. Lothrop, a member of the 1922 Oxford eight, and Litchfield, substitute on the Navy Olympic crew of 1920, complete the quota. The Unions will be under a considerable handicap today, being without the services of Davis, who rowed bow till three days ago, and of stroke Leighton who strained his back recently and will not be able to enter the race. However, in several contests over the Henley course in the past few weeks the crew has showed to good effect and should press the University oarsmen to the limit.

The line-ups of the three crews follow:

Union Boat Club. Bow, Hull; 2, Benz; 3, Damon; 4, Batchelder; 5, Litehfield; 6, Lothrop; 7, Jefferies; stroke, Thayer; con., Pilley.

University B. Bow, G. R. Johnson '23; 2, J. R. Hoover '24; 3, Francis Fiske '23; 4, J. D. Jameson '24; 5, H. R. Fuller '23; 6, C. K. Cummings '23; 7, R. C. Storey '24; stroke, B. F. Rice-Bassett '25; cox., B. H. Burnham '24.

University C. Bow, W. M. Fairleigh '25; 2, H. G. Curran '25; 3, Standish Bradford '24; 4, G. S. Mumford '25; 5, M. W. McGreevy '24; 6, R. S. Hubbard '24; 7, A. L. Hobson '24; stroke, R. F. Bradford '23; cox., C. S. Heard '25.

At 5 o'clock, immediately preceding the Union Boat Club race, the first University 160-pound crew, Combination 1, will meet the M. I. T. 150-pound eight on the Basin. Combination 1 again proved its superiority over the 1925 light-weights this afternoon by defeating the latter by three lengths over a mile course.

The University 150-pound line-up follows:--

Bow, Oliver La Farge '24; 2, H. P. Thomas '25; 3, R. B. Holman '25; 4, J. G. Flint '25; 5, H. K. Prince '24; 6, L. B. Damon '24; 7, L. L. Perkins '24; stroke, S. G. French '25; cox., E. N. Carson '24.

Crew C again demonstrated a fair margin over the Juniors in a race over the Henley yesterday, winning by one and a half lengths. It was steady rowing, combined with a timely spurt at the finish, that gave the third eight the advantage. Starting off about even, the two shells went along on even terms for a few hundred yards, but with Crew C creeping steadily to the fore and at the mile mark they were but half a length apart. Here Bradford raised the stroke, however, and added another length between Harvard bridge and the Henley flags.

Coach Bert Haines sent his Freshman crew over the mile course yesterday with the 150-pound crew as pace-setters. The latter were given nearly three lengths lead at the start but ended with a two-length deficit.
