Breaking the season's unbeaten record the University baseball team lost two of its four games played while on the invasion. In the first game on Tuesday with William and Mary College, the Crimson received a severe pounding and lost 14-0. In the next game with Young on the mound pitching very good ball, the University out-hit the midshipmen at Annapolis and won 7-4. On Thursday the University was defeated in Washington, D. C. by the Catholic University nine which drove two Crimson pitchers to the bench and won by the score of 13-7 after piling up eight runs in the first inning. In the final game the Crimson scored two runs and shut out Maryland State College due to Young's excellent pitching and the support given him.
The schedule of the trip was carried out as originally planned due to the excellent weather. On Monday afternoon the team, after a two hour work out in Richmond in the morning, watched the University tennis team play the Richmond Country Day School.
In the opening game with William and Mary College at Richmond, Va. on Tuesday, the hard-hitting William and Mary nine collected 18 hits from K. N. Hill and Bemis and sent 14 runners across the plate. The University batsmen collected only six hits from Saffelle and of the 31 players who faced him only three advanced as far as third base.
In the Annapolis game last Wednesday the University players were able to bat themselves to victory by the score of 7-4 after trailing up to the last half of the seventh inning. It was then that with the score 4-3 in favor of the midshipmen, the University drove in two runs on doubles by Gordon and Jenkins and a triple by Hammond. Two more runs
were made in the ninth when Clark drew a pass, stole second and was brought home on a double by Owen. A single by Hammond then scored Owen.
In Washington the next afternoon the weakness of the University's pitching staff was again demonstrated when the Catholic University put the game on ice by pounding out eight runs in the first inning. The Capital nine accomplished this by drawing four passes and slamming out two singles, a double, and a triple with the bases full.
The University was never able to overcome this eight run lead although they scored seven runs to the Catholic University's five during the remainder of the contest.
Playing much better ball than in any of the previous games, the University closed the southern trip by defeating Maryland State College at College Park on Friday by the shut-out route 2-0. Again Young pitched well allowing the Marylanders only six well scattered hits.
The University scored its first run in the fourth when Jenkins hit a terrific homer to left field. The final run in the fifth came on Clark's single and Gordon's hit and a double steal, Clark scoring.
