PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF NATURAL HISTORY J. L. GOODALE DIES

Came to University as Instructor in Botany in 1872

Professor George Lincoln Goodale, formerly Fisher professor of natural history and director of the botanic gardens at the University, and professor emeritus since 1909, died Thursday morning at his home at 5 Berkeley Street.

Professor Goodale was born in Saco, Maine, in 1839. He was graduated from Amherst in the class of 1860.

In 1867 he became professor in natural science at Bowdoin, serving for five years. During this time he was also professor of materia medica at the Medical School of Maine University.

Coming to the University in 1872, Professor Goodale was made instructor in botany and a lecturer on vegetable physiology. The next year he became assistant professor in botany, and was made a full professor in 1878. In 1888 he received the Fisher professorship of natural history, which he held until 1909. After his resignation the Corporation created him professor emeritus.
