Five baskets scored in rapid succession in the last two minutes of play put a game on ice for the University basketball team last night, when it over-whelmed the University of Maine 36-23 in Hemenway Gymnasium.
The visitors bewildered their opponents in the early stages of the first period, jumping quickly into a 7-3 lead, but the Crimson men soon became accustomed to the new style of attack, tied the score at 9-9, and shot ahead till the count stood at 18-11 at the end of the first half. Superior team-work asserted itself over loose passing and dribbling, although neither team could boast very accurate shooting.
The situation became tense for several minutes in the second session when the Maine players showed a burst of speed and came several times within a few points of tying the score, only to be overwhelmed in the final moments of the game.
Captain Gordon was the high scorer for the Crimson, but his passing was weak at times, while Newell starred for the visitors.
The summary:
Score, Harvard 36, University of Maine 23. Goals from floor, Gordon 6, Lowenthal 4, MoLeish 4, Miller, Samborski, Newell 3, Berg 3, Jowett 2. Goals from fouls, McLeish 4, Berg 7. Referee, Hoyt. Timekeeper, Lincoln. Time of halves, 20 minutes.
