CRIMSON TRAILS IN TRIANGULAR MEET

Snatching nine out of 13 first places, setting two new triangular meet records, and picking away at the second and third positions to swell their totals, Dartmouth and Cornell collaborated in keeping the University's score down at 28, while they themselves amassed 50 and 38 points, respectively, at Mechanics Building Saturday evening. They did not, however, provide the star. Captain Burke confined his efforts to two events, the 600 and 1000-yard runs, but in winning these, he scored over a third of the University's total, became the only double winner of the meet, and proved without a shadow of a doubt that he is the greatest middle distance runner of the three colleges. Eastman in the shot put and Marshall in the weight throw were the other Crimson winners. Libbey of Dartmouth broke his own old triangular record by two inches, clearing the bar at 12 feet 5 5-8 inches, while the Green lowered a mark set by the University relay quartet last year, breaking the tape in 3 minutes 9 1-5 seconds.

The Crimson Freshmen, taking part in only two events, lowered the meet record in the relay by nearly four seconds, when Chase, running number two, passed his man on the second lap and handed over a five-yard lead which was doubled by each succeeding runner in turn. Chase also placed second in the Freshman dash.

The broad jump, pole vault, and 35-pound weight throw, disposed of a Soldiers Field during the afternoon, started Dartmouth off on a 12-point lead over the Crimson and Cornell. Murphy's leap placed third in the jump, trailing Canfield and Swoboda of Hanover, Libbey's record in the pole vault was almost half a foot better than the efforts of Guinlock of Cornell and Skiles of Dartmouth, who tied for second at 12 feet flat, while Marshall was an easy winner in the weight.

Chapin sprang a surprise in the dash by taking second place, but the hurdles were a disappointment for the Crimson in that Hauers, who was favored to place high, slipped in an early heat and failed to qualify. Fletcher was third. Murphy's race in the 300 was one of the features of the evening. He ran brilliantly for two full laps, leading a field of much more experienced men, but ran himself out before a sensational finish when two Dartmouth men snatched the two first places from his grasp.

It was all Burke in the 600 and 1000-yard runs. In the former he led all the way; in the latter the allowed two Hanoverians brief glimpses of first place; in both cases he won as he pleased and came within three-fifths of a second of record time. The bell lap of the 1000 was especially sensational when Burke swung wide and dazzled the crowd with one of his typical finishes.

Sherburne's belated sprint in the mile and Lund's third position in the two-mile run were features of two events won by Cornell. The quartet which represented the University in the relay did well considering the fact that it was more or less of a make-shift. Chapin's lead-off was the only time in the race that the Crimson held the pole, and Merrill, at anchor, finished last behind Dartmouth and Cornell.

Captain Brown, the Green's star high jumper, won his event at six feet two and seven-eighths inches, but he failed to make a new record. His three attempts to clear the bar at six feet five and one-half inches fell flat.
