1927 BASKETBALL MEN GET FIRST SCRIMMAGE

IS ORGANIZING NEW SYSTEM OF DORMITORY CONTESTS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"There is more basketball ability on this year's Freshman squad than on last year's" said Coach S. B. Chase 3L after the first scrimmage of the season yesterday. He added, however, that while the squad as a whole seemed above the average, it was uncertain whether the first five would be the equal of last year's championship team. This dearth of individual stars will stimulate competition and make effective teamwork absolutely essential.

Drill on Fundamentals

The Scrimmage yesterday was brief, and came as the conclusion of a long drill on offensive formations. Team A consisted provisionally of Phelps and Leekly, forwards; Malick and Light-bourn, guards; and Vogel, center. Men likely to replace these men at any time are Eby and Eaton, forwards; Hesse and Coombs, guards; and De Ravign, center. The squad, cut yesterday for the last time, is now composed of 21 men.

The drill on fundamentals has been long and rigorous. Throughout the first three weeks of practice scrimmaging was taboo, and not until recently was defensive and offensive drill begun. Adeptness at handling the ball has been emphasized above all else. Coach Wachter of the University team has assisted Coach Chase in demonstrating the principles of passing, dribbling, and shooting.

From now until Christmas vacation, daily scrimmaging will be the rule. There are no scheduled games until after the holidays, but Coach Chase feels that a thorough working out of all his material is necessary in order to whip the squad into shape.

New interdormitory System

Coach Chase has a new system of interdormitory basketball competition. He is organizing three teams from each of the Freshman halls, each trip representing one of the three basketball periods which meet at 2, 3 and 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The 2 o'clock teams of Gore, Standish, and Smith will carry on an independent competition as will the other two sets of teams.

At the end of a season of about two weeks, during which time each team will play twice a week and practice once a week, the winners of the respective competitions will play one another for first, second, and third place. If one of the dormitories is not represented in the first trio, it will be necessary to choose the best team from that dormitory to take part in the final competition.

All Freshmen, with the exception of the 21 on the first squad, are eligible to play on these teams.
