As a result of its 4-1 defeat of the Newton Centre team, the University squash racquets team advanced to second place in the Class A Standing. R. P. Rose, playing a hard, smashing game, won the first match for the Crimson. Captain Dixon, although within at one time three points of being beaten, finally defeated Bray, and Harrington and Glessner followed him with victories.
In the latter match Glessner led Cooke 14-7 in the second game only to have his opponent stage a brilliant rally and take it away from him. Glessner then captured the next two games rather easily. G. D. Debevoise was beaten by Church, who played fine squash and won three out of four games in a close match.
The summaries: Dixon defeated Bray (Newton), 15-10, 10-15, 15-17, 15-12, 15-7; Church (Newton) defeated Debevoise, 15-17, 15-9, 16-14, 15-12; Harrington defeated Holt (Newton), 15-13, 15-10, 15-9; Glessner defeated Cooke (Newton), 15-13, 15-17, 15-4, 15-6; Rose defeated Goddard (Newton), 15-12, 8-15, 15-6, 18-14.
The University Team B was also successful as it overcame the Union Boat Club Team B by 4 matches to 1. Captain W. I. Badger Jr. won the only point for the visitors when he defeated J. D. DuBois in three out of four games. E. M. Upjohn played beautifully and allowed his opponent an average of only five points per game in the three games of his match. Both F. I. Carpenter Jr. and R. S. Wright were victorious in close matches, the latter staging a brilliant comeback after being two games down to Ralph May.
The summaries: Badger (U. B. C.) defeated DuBois, 17-18, 15-10, 16-15, 15-4; Upjohn defeated Wallace (U. B. C.), 15-6, 15-6, 15-4; Carpenter defeated Adams (U. B. C.), 15-10, 17-15, 18-17; Wright defeated May (U. B. C.), 3-15, 10-15, 15-11, 18-16, 15-8; Finley defeated Jeffreys (U. B. C.), 15-12, 12-15, 15-7, 15-7.
The Freshman players, despite the fact that they had won their first two matches, lost the remaining three to the Newton Centre Team B. Inexperience counted heavily against the Freshmen, who were, moreover, playing in unfamiliar courts. Even so Merriman put up a good fight against Buell, and was only defeated in four close games.
The summary: Buell (Newton) defeated Merriman, 13-15, 18-17, 15-12, 15-7; Fernald (Newton) defeated Jackson, 15-9, 15-12, 15-11; Jackson (Newton) defeated Wister, 15-9, 15-9, 15-10.
