Madame Manda Landowska of Paris will give a lecture-recital on "The French Forerunners of Sebastian Bach" Monday evening at 8.30 o'clock in Paine Hall of the Music Building. She will illustrate her lecture by playing selections on the harpsichord.
Madame Landowska, who is a Polish artist, lived many years in Paris, where she studied the music of the 17th and 18th centuries and did much original research in the lives of the masters of these two centuries.
Many lecturers on music illustrate their remarks by playing some instrument, but usually the rendition of these illustration numbers is markedly inferior to the standard of a master of the instrument. Madame Landowska, however, uses the harpsichord with a truly artistic style and effect.
This season she will play with the Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Chicago symphony orchestras. Following this concert tour Madame Landowska will return to Paris, after which she will tour the Continent, visiting the most important musical centers of Europe.
The concert Monday evening, which is being given under the auspices of the Division of Music, will be open to the public and tickets for it at 50 cents and $1.00 may be purchased at Amee's Bookstore in Brattle Square.
