Taking advantage of the comparatively warm weather yesterday afternoon the University baseball squad played a six inning practice game These games, however, are numbered. With the ever present threat of the autumnal breezes that sport about Soldiers Field Coach Slattery expects that practice will have to be discontinued about the middle of next week.
Although there have been no games with outside teams this fall, Coach Slattery is very well pleased with the material which he has found. R. G. Norris '24, a pinch hitter of last year's squad, has shown particularly good form. In the four games already played, he has registered a home run, a triple, and a double, besides hitting singles consistently. Coach Slattery has also noticed a marked improvement in the way he handles the ball at first. F. S. Hill '24 has played brilliant baseball, scoring two home runs and fielding steadily at second. Perhaps the most unexpected find is L. O. V. Mann '25, who has been shifted from his regular position at second to third.
The battery candidates have rounded into shape very quickly. Coach Slattery has been particularly impressed by the improvement in E. C. Herrmann '24. J. E. Toulmin '24 has developed a fast curve with a sudden break that is very deceptive. Although D. G. Casto '26 has a slow delivery, his perfect control and change in pace makes him a formidable moundsman. Behind the bat, Thorwald Sanchez '24 has been the outstanding player.
The practice of playing daily games will be continued as long as the weather permits, although the games will of necessity be shorter on account of the early darkness.
