SIXTY REPORT FOR FALL TRACK WORK

Martin Will Not Coach for Present--Farrell in Charge but no Move Yet to Make Him Acting Head Coach

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Only about 60 men reported yesterday at the opening meeting of the fall track season, more than two-thirds of whom were University candidates. As a large number of Freshmen have signed up for track work at Wadsworth House, a much larger first year squad will probably turn out this afternoon.

At the meeting it was stated that in the immediate future the Advisory Committee will meet to select an assistant for Coach Farrell, who because of his cross-country work will not be able to devote full time to the track candidates. No one has yet been definitely mentioned in connection with the appointment. Coach Martin will take no part in the work with the track men for the present, but the Athletic Committee has as yet taken no action definitely making Farrell acting head coach in Martin's absence.

Captain Merrill, speaking to the squad, stressed the need of fast work during the five-week season to make up for the late start. He then stated that inexperienced men had an excellent chance to win a University letter, illustrating his point with references to J. F. Brown '22, C. A. C. Eastman '24, R. D. Gerould '24, and B. R. Cutcheon '25, all of whom gained their insignia in spite of the fact that they did their first track work after entering College.

Coach Farrell Asks for Fighters

Coach Farrell said: "There are many good men on the squad on whom we can count for first places. What the team needs are those fighters who come through in the finishes with second or third place points which must be had to win any meet. These positions don't fall to star performers but to men who are willing to work and plug every day, and who try to profit by the things which the coaches and experienced men tell them." He then outlined the work of the season and the training rules which will be enforced.

Among the members of last year's University squad who reported were G. E. Barker '25, R. H. Hallowell '25, J. U. Harris '24, R. D. Gerould '24, J. M. Greeley '25, L. C. Keyes '24, Jefferson Fletcher '25, J. H. Sherburne '24, and W. B. Thomas '25. There were also several men from the 1926 Freshman team, among them R. G. Allen, P. F. A. Altmann, J. H. Broome, L. O. Combs, and D. LeB. Sweeney. Other veterans will no doubt be out soon.

Several Will Take Part In Carnival

Several Crimson track men are scheduled to take part in the City of Boston Athletic Carnival on the Common at 10 o'clock on the morning of October 12. Among these are Eastman in the, shot put, M. R. Smith in the broad jump, and Allen, Brooks, and Broome in the 100 and 440-yard runs. Others will probably sign up today.

This afternoon at 4 o'clock on the Charlesbank course both the University and Freshman cross-country squads will be given their first time trials of the season. On the basis of the showing made in these tests the Freshmen who will eat at the training table will be selected. Monday afternoon all the candidates will move out to the Belmont course for practice.
