Activities of the Department of Physical Education began yesterday with the first meetings of the Freshman required exercise groups and of the five o'clock gymnasium classes.

The required exercise groups, which are exclusively for Freshmen, met yesterday afternoon at 2, 3, 4, and 5 o'clock. Every Freshman who is not participating in some organized activity was expected to report with the group which he selected at the first meeting of Hygiene 1 on Thursday, September 27. Yesterday afternoon the men were subdivided into groups for participation in one of the following activities: handball, tennis, fencing, equitation, single sculls or swimming.

The five o'clock gymnasium class which began yesterday is always open to all members of the University. It is designed especially for students in the graduate schools, and unlike the Freshman exercise groups, attendance is voluntary.
